The editors liked
Image quality is excellent. We used the Carl Zeiss 24–70mm lens which is ruinously expensive ($2214) and absolutely sublime
Optically and mechanically. Video quality is the best we have had from a DSLR and the continuous autofocus tracking
Controlled by
24.3MP
Noise under control
AF Range control
Articulating screen
The Sony Alpha a99 SLTA99V has a lot going for it
Including excellent photos and very good video
A wellconstructed and welldesigned body
Solid performance
And a great feature set.
The editors didn't like
The electronic viewfinder is a 2.4m dot screen
But it still has the feeling of looking at the subject on television
Unlike the traditional mirror/prism viewfinder that is unbeatable for realism
AF slower than rivals'
Poor noncross type AF
Object Tracking mode is limited
For some folks
Things like the lack of CompactFlash
Poor battery life
And compromises on video autofocus may not be reasonable tradeoffs

Even though the Canon won our 2012 Camera of the Year award (see page 58), the Sony A99 remains one of the best new cameras we've seen this year. It shows that the new perspectives being brought to photography by the likes of traditional electronics compa...
Light body, bright and detailed viewfinder, most flexible LCD on any camera, high level of customisation, general image quality, superb handling, Smart Teleconversion function, highquality video
Delay in changing exposure settings, slow start up, electronic viewfinder can stagger, occasional focus freezing issues, unhelpful error messages lead to dead ends in operation
The A99 is a decidedly different proposition for the professional user than what we've seen previously. It clearly feels like a camera which has evolved from models beneath it in its range, rather than one designed specifically to satisfy a profession...

The Sony Alpha 99 is a full-featured full-frame D-SLR that can focus as quickly when recording video as it does for still images, but it doesn't have an optical viewfinder....
Fast burst mode beyond its rivals, continuous autofocus in good light, movie mode, silent adjustment dial, electronic viewfinders don't come any better, full-frame image quality, vari-angle LCD mount, teleconverter mode, AF Range option
Centralised AF point arrangement, autofocus system not as fast or customisable as competition, AF point adjustment shows in black which can be hard to see, battery life really doesn't cut it, limited buffer feels inconsistent with burst feature, pricey, a
The first full-frame SLT has plenty of strengths such as a fast burst mode, great movie mode and quality pictures, but comes up a little short elsewhere. The battery life isn't good enough, the burst mode is hindered by the buffer's limitations, pictur...
On paper the Alpha 99 reads well, and for the best part it is impressive in the hand, too. It is made to a high standard, its LCD screen and viewfinder are easy to use, and there are useful additional accessories available, namely the battery grip that ca...
