The editors liked

  • The sensible zoom range means that images are sharp at both focal length extremes. Exposure is consistently accurate. The GPS works well. Movie mode is outstanding and the 120 page instruction manual is clear and comprehensive.
  • Rugged design
  • Comfortable to use
  • Geo-tagging
  • Functional design
  • Great screen
  • Included GPS
  • Strong Video and Audio handling
  • Action control is useful. GPS updates with zero fuss. Great-quality HD video for a camera in this class

The editors didn't like

  • We do have a question about the useability
  • In extreme situations
  • Of a camera with such small buttons. Nikon is no different from other cameras in the indestructible category
  • Sometimes struggled with exposure
  • Video mode not great
  • LCD hard to see when outdoors
  • Its weatherproof attitude has limits
  • Lacks panoramic shooting modes
  • Very limited exposure control. Image detail falters at mid- to high-ISO levels

  • lightweight and small, quick between shots, GPS does not waste power, higer ISO photos are clear, good battery life, vibration reduction works really well
  • complicated menus, waterproofness needs to be serviced yearly, poor zoom performance when in video mode
