The editors liked

  • Cortana is fantastic
  • Better at being both a desktop and a tablet OS
  • Free for most
  • Start menu is functionally excellent
  • Action Center features are handy
  • Settings app is finally a Control Panel replacement
  • Universal apps are higher quality

The editors didn't like

  • Windows Hello requires new hardware for most
  • Microsoft Edge has a terrible logo and terrible name. Can we please go back to calling it Spartan?
  • Swapping between notebook and tablet mode can still feel a little disjointed at times
  • Will devs embrace Universal apps?
  • Some Windows 8.1 features may be missed
  • Expensive without free upgrade

  • Abstract:  When Windows 8 was launched back in 2012, I called it the ' hybrid OS ' because Microsoft built essentially two operating systems packaged into one bundle. The OS was a complete failure on nearly all fronts for the company and resulted in a change of lead...

  • Abstract:  To fall in love with something is to embrace it fully. You have to appreciate what it brings to the table and the unfamiliar things that it adds to your life. Being comfortable with its legacy is also important. Microsoft hopes that you'll love Windows 10...

  • Fast startup. Rich software and device ecosystem. Familiar interface with Start menu. Action center provides non-ephemeral, interactive notifications. Automatic switching between touch and desktop modes. Lightweight Microsoft Office apps included. Better
  • Some elements are less touch-friendly than in Windows 8.1. Browser lacks extensions. Skype and OneDrive integration could be improved. Less integration with mobile OS than Mac OS X. Some interface duplications remain
  • Window 10 seems destined to win the hearts of all of those who were averse to Windows 8, bringing back familiarity and a bounty of new capabilities. This free upgrade is a no-brainer for most...

  • All of the great Windows 7 desktop interface features are back, All apps and programs behave the same way depending on if you're in desktop or tablet mode, If you're upgrading from Windows 7, you'll notice a huge speed boost, Universal Apps will be flexi
  • Cortana can't control 3rd party apps like in Windows Phone (yet),  Tablet mode may have a learning curve (but you don't have to use it), Some older programs designed for desktop Windows don't work quite as well in Tablet mode, Many Universal apps are not
  • Some are saying that Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows. I don't really buy that though. Things need to grow and evolve. Really, Windows 10 will simply receive new updates (aka new versions) more frequently as part of Windows Update. We migh...

  • Brings together Microsoft's best desktop and touchscreen interfaces, Easy upgrade process, Cortana and Edge alone are worth upgrading, Changes to modern Windows apps finally makes them useful
  • No major changes beyond the traditional Windows desktop, Xbox One game streaming requires a robust network, Still not many worthwhile modern Windows apps yet
  • Windows 10 is the ideal next step for Microsoft, bringing together the best elements of Windows 7 and 8. With new features like Cortana and Edge, extensive desktop interface refinements and Microsoft's free upgrade offer, it's a must-have for anyone who...
