The editors liked

  • Cortana is fantastic
  • Better at being both a desktop and a tablet OS
  • Free for most
  • Start menu is functionally excellent
  • Action Center features are handy
  • Settings app is finally a Control Panel replacement
  • Universal apps are higher quality

The editors didn't like

  • Windows Hello requires new hardware for most
  • Microsoft Edge has a terrible logo and terrible name. Can we please go back to calling it Spartan?
  • Swapping between notebook and tablet mode can still feel a little disjointed at times
  • Will devs embrace Universal apps?
  • Some Windows 8.1 features may be missed
  • Expensive without free upgrade

  • We extensively tested the Windows 10 Anniversary Update on our Surface Pro 2, and found it to be so stable we never experienced a crash of any kind. We also judge that the wide array of improvements make this a “must have” new version for anyone running W...

  • Simple, touch-friendly interface, Fast, Good photo browsing features, Good selection of image-correction tools, Automatically creates albums, Doesn't require importing, Shows photo file with map and EXIF data
  • Few filters and effects, No star ratings, No before-and-after view, No Save As, No face tagging
  • Microsoft Photos, Windows 10's default photo app, provides handy, touch-friendly photo management and editing in a clean interface. But look elsewhere for high-end filters and effects...

  • Windows 10 Mobile is a fine operating system and most certainly the best yet from Microsoft. On a feature-for-feature basis, it is nearly equal to what's available from Apple and Google. The biggest issue facing Windows 10 will continue to be apps...

  • But is this going to be the upgrade to move people off of Windows 7? In my opinion, yes it is. Windows 10 should bring enough of the familiarity with Windows 7 to 2015 that the majority of users should have a great upgrade experience. The Start Menu is ba...
