The editors liked

  • Image quality is exceptionally fine
  • As we expect from this line of cameras. Skin tones are natural and colours are accurate. The long zoom lens works better than expected
  • Focussing smartly at all focal lengths but with some distortion at the extremes...
  • Massive 15.1-megapixel resolution
  • Incredible LCD display
  • Fast burst mode
  • Fairly good Live View mode
  • Option for an image stabilised kit lens
  • ISO 6400 and 12800

The editors didn't like

  • A three exposure auto-bracket for a camera in this price range is inadequate.
  • A little more chromatic aberration than usual
  • 95 per cent viewfinder coverage

  • Abstract:  Canon's digital SLR range splits broadly into two areas. At the bottom end are the amateur cameras with APS-C sized sensors, and at the top end are the professional cameras with full-frame sensors (the pro-level EOS 1D Mark III is the odd one out wit...

  • Abstract:  Boasting a 50 per cent increase in pixel count, the Canon 50D is an update to the hugely capable but underrated ten-megapixel EOS 40D. As well as the increase in resolution, the new model boasts 14-bit colour, sensitivity up to ISO 12800, a new 300dpi ...

  • Abstract:  Although Canons 10-million pixel Eos 40D was a capable contender for the top slot in the semi-pro market, it quickly lost out to the superior and pricier Nikon D300. Now, though, using its considerable manufacturing muscle, Canon has introduced the Eo...

  • Abstract:  The E Canon EOS 50D is the fifth generation of enthusiast D-SLR from Canon, with each model evolving and showing improvements. As you’d expect, the Canon EOS 50D is a very well-rounded camera. There’s the class-leading 15.1Mp chip, impressive ISO range...

  • The EOS 50D is a no-frills camera – there’s nothing really exciting here to stop you in your tracks. It’s hard to complain, though, as it does exactly what you’d expect, and does it with style. It responds quickly and feels like it’ll last even in a pr...

  • The new Canon EOS 50D is apparently not intended to replace its predecessor the 40D though, and will sit alongside it as a 'sister' model.Apart from a new silver bezel on the Mode Dial, the 50D has inherited virtually the same beefy magnesium alloy bod...

  • Abstract:  The Canon EOS 50D is a trusty model with an excellent number of enhanced shooting features compared to the 40D. With such important emphasis placed on auto shooting modes and dumbed-down shutter and aperture tweaks, though, its bizarre that this came...

  • Impressive feature set, Strong picture quality, Pleasant to handle
  • Gadgets are a big battery drain, LCD display attracts grubby fingerprints

  • Excellent image quality, good ergonomics and build, menu system, comprehensive feature set and customisability, info panel, responsive
  • Joystick and Quick Dial take getting used to; shadow detail lost too quickly, noise processing eats detail over ISO 1000 (and at lowest setting)
  • While the new model is essentially presented in the same wrapper as the 40D, it has significant improvements that make it very tempting indeed...

  • Rugged build; excellent design; 6.3fps shooting; high-res LCD
  • Unexceptional definition; disappointing 17-85mm kit lens
  • The EOS 50D is an excellent semi-pro camera with slick controls, rugged build and a terrific continuous shooting rate of 6.3fps. But while the camera's great, the pictures are pretty average, despite that 15-megapixel sensor. The fine detail in JPEGs ...
