The editors liked

  • Image quality is exceptionally fine
  • As we expect from this line of cameras. Skin tones are natural and colours are accurate. The long zoom lens works better than expected
  • Focussing smartly at all focal lengths but with some distortion at the extremes...
  • Massive 15.1-megapixel resolution
  • Incredible LCD display
  • Fast burst mode
  • Fairly good Live View mode
  • Option for an image stabilised kit lens
  • ISO 6400 and 12800

The editors didn't like

  • A three exposure auto-bracket for a camera in this price range is inadequate.
  • A little more chromatic aberration than usual
  • 95 per cent viewfinder coverage

  • Abstract:  Despite the popular 40D SLR digital camera being only a little over a year old, Canon has decided to release the follow-up to build on the successful high-end line ahead of schedule. Although the 40D will still be available in retail outlets through th...

  • Abstract:  The EOS 50D was announced on 26 August 2008. It is Canons latest DSLR for serious amateurs, especially those shooting sports and action on a $1,399 budget. If youre a serious every-weekend sports shooter and have less than $1,600 to spend on a DSLR ...

  • Abstract:  Almost exactly a year after the arrival of the EOS 40D, Canon has announced the 50D, which were assured will be a sister-model, rather than a replacement. Recent history has seen Canon release new models every 18 months-or-so but its been a busy y...

  • A number of EOS 50D reviews have been somewhat critical, suggesting that by reducing the pixel size in going from the 10MP of the sensor used in the EOS 40D to the 15MP sensor used in the 50D Canon have overreached themselves and this has resulted in a...

  • Abstract:  The improvements from the 40D to 50D are almost impossible to distinguish on looks alone. The body type and size are virtually identical and with the exception of a new model number, you might think this is actually the same camera. However, Canon has tun...

  • Abstract:  The digital SLR market is a divided into three main strata, separated by price, specification and target audience. At the lowest end you have the entry-level models such as the Nikon D40 (£244 inc. lens), the Sony A200 (£300 inc. lens), the Olympus E-420 ...

  • The new Canon EOS 50D is a superbly versatile piece of kit. If you’re an existing Canon owner in search of a rugged APS-C format camera, there’s no need to look any further. But, if you’re in the market for a new system, it’s not q...
