The editors liked
The more we use the Panasonic touch screen system the more we like it. The ultrafast auto focus means that a light touch on the subject area on the screen takes a perfectly focused and exposed picture every time.
Fast performance and excellent raw photo quality
Combined with Panasonic's veteran touch-screen/direct-control hybrid interface
Make the Lumix DMC-GX1 a strong ILC choice

The editors didn't like
We wouldn't buy this camera/lens combination because the power zoom is like a throwback to compact systems. For anyone primarily intending to take stills the conventional — and cheaper — kit zoom is the way to go for quick
Precise changes of focal length
The new X-series PZ kit lens could use some design tweaks
Sturdy metal body, Customisable interface, loads of controls and settings, Very good picture quality (sharpness and noise control up to 1600 ISO), Full HD video with stereo sound, Compact zoom lens with electronic controls (good for smooth videos)
Noisy shutter, No manual video modes or mic socket, Electronic zoom controls (slight lag when changing focal length)
The Panasonic Lumix GX1 is an excellent successor to the GF1, bringing a host of great new features from Panasonic's bulkier cameras (G3) and consumer models alike (GF3). This pleasant and effective hybrid compact is ideal for anyone looking for fast a...
Flexible, configurable hardware; Small lens system courtesy of Micro Four Thirds system; Good low-light performance
None
A highly configurable camera that will appeal directly to the more ambitious photographer. Excellent low-light performance, accurate colour reproduction and sharp, noise-free results at even fairly middling sensitivity mean you'll have trouble finding ...
Great build quality, Good range of customisable features, Effective Creative Controls, Fast AF system, Decent image quality and overall low light performance
Touchscreen could be more responsive, Several of the controls may prove fiddly for some, No built-in viewfinder, LCD is fixed rather than articulated

Small yet richly featured, Excellent image quality, Good low-light performance, Built-in flash and hotshoe connector
Lumix 'X' powered zoom can be a bit fiddly
Overall image quality is fantastic and certainly on a par with the G3, with the GX1 being able to produce images full of bright, vibrant colours, pleasing tonality and contrast, sharp edges and good levels of detail. Given that the two cameras share the s...
Abstract: A compact, lightweight all-rounder, this Micro Four Thirds Lumix has tank-like sturdiness and hefty dollops of user-friendliness, whether you're a shutter nutter or wet behind the ears. There are tons of controls – both physical and via touchscreen – or y...
Abstract: At first glance, the Lumix DMC-GX1 reminds us of the Lumix DMC-GF1, but with a more compact build. Panasonic has incorporated a mode dial, hotshoe and four function buttons on the GX1, unlike the later GF-series cameras such as the Lumix DMC-GF2 and GF...
Abstract: Action is one thing the GX1 nails, thanks to its lightning-quick burst mode which can capture 20 shots in a single second (albeit at a reduced resolution) and an autofocus so speedy it feels as if it's locked on before you push the button. The mode dial an...
Nice build quality; more physical control buttons; power-zoom lens is great for videos; fast autofocus speeds.
Difficult to manually focus with powerzoom lens; JPEG images are soft.
There's a lot going for the GX1 if you are looking for a smaller camera to complement your DSLR. In terms of performance, it is a speedy little shooter with autofocus speeds that almost match a DSLR, though we have to say that it sometimes misses the ...
