The editors liked

  • Image quality is excellent with brilliant resolution
  • Colour and dynamic range. The image stabilised lens
  • Although made down to a price
  • Performs well both mechanically and optically.
  • The Canon EOS 70D's new sensor delivers excellent autofocus performance and the camera itself is quite fast. Its design is reasonably streamlined and the feature set appropriately tailored to the target market as well
  • Excellent image quality
  • Plenty of control over images
  • Responsive
  • Articulated touchscreen
  • WiFi built in for remote control
  • 19AF points all crosstype

The editors didn't like

  • The kit lens
  • Good as it is
  • Does display marked distortion at both the wide and telephoto extremes. This is characteristic of inexpensive lenses with a long zoom range and we would opt for the 18–55mm lens in the kit
  • The image quality doesn't overly impress for this price class
  • And certain aspects of the design -- notably single card slot
  • Hard-to-control multicontroller and the Wi-Fi/movie mode conflict resolution -- are annoying
  • Creative Filters JPEG only
  • HDR mode JPEG only
  • Creative Filters live view only
  • Viewfinder level can be hard to see
  • Metering problems in high contrast

  • Dual Pixel autofocus closes the live view gap between DSLR and CSC cameras - it's very impressive, proven 19-point AF system works well in most lighting conditions, 7fps burst at full resolution with decent buffer, great image quality, responsive touchscr
  • Not 100% FoV viewfinder, high ISO noise reduction a little rough, autofocus can unwontedly drift between subjects during movie capture, no headphone jack for audio monitoring, some overexposure, filters unavailable in raw + JPEG shooting, single SD, Wi-Fi
  • The 70D represents the DSLR in the post-mirror age. If you're looking for an all-rounder when it comes to both still images and movie capture then there's no other pure DSLR out there that can offer such a varied and successful feature set. It's th...

  • Great touchscreen performance, Impressive 19-point AF system, Dual-pixel sensor AF delivers fantastic Live-view AF performance, Solid build
  • Slight issues with AWB performance, Limited creative filter implementation
  • The Canon EOS 70D is a real step forward in the world of DSLR photography, and if you shoot a lot of video, or find yourself using live view image capture with any regularity, it's a great choice. But It's not without its faults, with a few bugs in the Cr...

  • Lack of full water sealing may deter prosumer users, Not as ruggedised as the 7D

  • Abstract:  This is probably the last gadget review we do this year and what a rocking time we had with this camera. We got our hands on the Canon 70D to run it through our test bench. This is a no-nonsense DSLR from Canon, built to perform in almost any type of ligh...

  • Due to sheer lack of space, it is impossible to write about everything that we tried out on the EOS 70D. New features like Wi-Fi were a bit of a ‘hit or miss' whereas the dual-pixel and fast speed of operation impressed overall. It is not just a bump over...

  • Impressive image quality, Super continuous AF for movies, Builtin WiFi, 19AF pounts, Responsive touchscreen
  • Single SD card slot, No builtin GPS, Unable to record videos when WiFi
  • For photographers and Canon fans who have been waiting for a successor to the well-loved EOS 60D, the EOS 70D is definitely a worthy one as it retains much of what was loved in its predecessor but has new and improved features such as the Dual Pixel CMOS...

  • Excellent new autofocus system, Superb image quality, Handy Wi-Fi and touchscreen
  • Bigger than a mirrorless cam, Expensive
  • The 70D is Canon's best DSLR for ages. While its recent entry-level models have been near flawless in their own right, they've not really offered anything that might make compact system camera users sit up and take notice. But the 70D does exactly that. D...
